How to Build a Flower Bed Water Fountain

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Urn or pot
  • Water fountain pump kit
  • Gravel
  • Cinder blocks or bricks
  • Drill
  • Spatula
  • Quick-drying concrete
  • Water
Step1
Get a planting pot or urn. Choose one that stands tall enough so that it will show better in the midst of plants of different sizes and colors. The ideal height is 2 to 3 feet tall. Choose one that has only one hole in the middle; a terra cotta pot or a tall urn usually comes with one hole. If it has more than one, patch the extra holes with quick-drying concrete. If it doesn't come with any hole, use a drill with a masonry bit and drill one hole in the center. Make the hole big enough to fit a power cord plug.
Step2
Get a water fountain pump. You can buy one from a home improvement store in the garden section or at any nursery that sells fountains and pond materials. Choose a small size for smaller pots and a medium size for bigger pots.
Step3
Insert the power cord from the inside out through the bottom hole. Leave enough cord so you can adjust later on for height. Hide the rest of the cord under the mulch or leaves of plants.
Step4
Put two to three cinder blocks or bricks inside the middle area of the pot. This will hold the pump machine and water spitter.
Step5
Add gravel at the bottom of the pot to add weight and support for the blocks or bricks and to cover the exposed cord.
Step6
Fill in with water, making sure that the pump is lower than the water.
Step7
Plug in the cord and check if the water is rising up and spitting correctly. Adjust the height of the pump and water as necessary.
Step8
Add rocks around the exterior of the pot to help keep it in place.
