How to know William Sydney Porter stories??
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
His name was William Sydney Porter; and no doubt he was one of the famous and smart short stories writers. Porter was born on September 11, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina. William loved to read the classical stories and lots of books and graduated from Lindsey Street High School. He started working as a bookkeeper in his uncle's drugstore and in 1881, at the age of nineteen; he was licensed as a pharmacist. His short stories were famous because of their smart plot, worldplay and the fantastic twist endings. O. Henry's in his last years was an alcoholic addict; he had suffered from health ills, and money problems. He married Sara Lindsay Coleman in 1907, but the marriage was not happy, and they separated a year later. O. Henry died because of cirrhosis on June 5, 1910, in New York. This essay will go to conclude two of Porter short stories and the literally qualities like the theme, the story plot and the characterization.
Step2
First story is The Ransom of Red Chief; the story is talking about an abduction of a young boy by Bill Driscoll and Sam Howard. Bill and Sam have kidnapped the little boy to demand 2000$ in order to launch a land fraud scheme in Illinois. The story becomes more comedy after the two criminals didn’t find any reply from the boy family and in the same time the boy was enjoying being with two criminals and he calls him self later Red chief, later they reduce the demand money to 1500$ and finally they received a reply to their ransom letter from Red Chief's father offering to take the boy off their hands for $250, they quickly return him and flee town as fast as they can.
The Ransom of Red Chief theme is comedy and it tells us some thing that we can benefit in our life that not every thing always run as you want. The plot in this story was clearly shown when they didn’t receive any reply from the Red Chief family but when they reduce the demand money they finally received a reply from the boy father asking to release his son for 250$ but even its too little they accept it. The betty characterization was shown in the two criminals and the young boy was a not fear from them and was enjoying time with them and that gives the comedy flavor to the story. We also will be shocked by the surprising ending that the criminals accepted the 250$ and ran away
Step3
The second story is The Rubber Plant's Story, its really wonderful story which talking about Rubber plant life. In this story O-Henry make the plant the ability to speak to itself, and the theme of the story is almost comedy because of the reactions and the believes of the Rubber plant on the human and some little things that we don’t notice. Also during the story we will found that there is lots of surprising accidences that the plant expected the worse but every thing goes fine, for example her last owner ((the girl)) when she find her in the grocery and decided to buy it because it was bringing lots of memories to her, then the plant was expecting bad treatment but the girl treat the plant very well and shared with it her feelings and her tears.
In the end I want to conclude that O-Henry short stories are fascinating literal work which have as I mentioned smart plot, worldplay and the fantastic twist endings, so that it have attract all readers even after more than 50 years of his death.
